RESUMO

Evaluation of the speech production of cleft palate subjects is a complex problem, which requires multidisciplinary approaches and several research paradigms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the speech of cleaft palate subjects from a basically phonetic perspective. 24 patients (age range 7 - 45 years) were divided into the following 4 groups, according to period and type of surgery: G1, overt palate; G2, pre-and post-surgery; G3, subjects submitted to pharvngoplasty; G4, subjects in pre-surgery for minor surgical repairs. The speech task was emission of words. Speech samples were recorded in an acoustically isolated room and spectrograms were obtained. Quantitative data were submitted to statiscal analysis. Emissions were taken according to mode of production (primary ar secundary) and qualitatively assessed through the use of 8 classification distributions in categories. results showed similar distributions in all categories and are discussed from the point of view of the following three basic processes: the aerodynamics of speech, the concept of a regulatory system of motor patterns, and variability in velopharyngeal occlusion patterns and nasality production. The phonetic approach was adequate as a means to reveal some important factors in the process of speech production of cleft palate subjects
