RESUMO

Its undeniable all the changes in human activities caused by the technological developments and by the information systems. Enviromental scanning, analysis and use of information thus obtained may be associated to the success of the organizations. Companies of the ICT setor operate in an environment highly dynamic, complex and competitive. This research shows that ICT companies in Belo Horizonte do perform some sort of Environmental Scanning: the organizations researched view themselves as cut-edge technological companies; they consider the Client as the most important sector, and the Tecnological as the most monitored and dynamic; they search for information in both formal and informal manner, and they analyse and share the external information in order to, among other things, to create new products and services to allow them to survive in such hostile environment; Internet is as much a tool as it is a source of information and a diferential competitive mechanism for the sector. Finally, this research points out some possible areas for future researches.
