RESUMO

A Continuous Vertical Annular Static Mixer Dryer was constructed and studied (Industrial Patent 8700583). The equipment consisted on a cylindrical drying column constructed in transparent acrylics, and a fan that blowed the ambient air, which was heated by a set of electrical heaters. The air flow rate was controlled by changing the admission area of the fan. The number of electrical heaters used determined the temperature. The material to be dried, soybean seeds, and drying air were admitted in counterflow through the column, and the material that was dried to the desired humidity recicled by a pneumatic transport system. A set of steel plates with alternated twisted paths where installed in the interior of the drying column in order to promote the solids mixture and to increse the transfer area between the material to be dried and air, thus enhancing the drying homogeneity and the eficiency of the mass tranfer. These mixers were perforated in order to ease the drying air flow, and they also caused a solids mixture by its successive reversion. This study included the fluid dynamic behavior, the heat transfer and the mass tranfer, and a comparison of the energetic efficiency between the Annular Static Mixer Dryer and a commercially available dryer. The dryer operational parameters were: drying air temperature, 50, 60 and 70°C; drying air flow rate, 0,74 and 1,06 m3/min; material flow rate, 160 and 210 g/s; and two material flow regimes, dense and free-falling flow. It was found an energy saving of 98% compared with the Kepler Weber dryer evaluated.
