RESUMO

In many countries corrugated board industry have been forced to improve the quality of recycled material to make it more competitive and to reduce both the needs for virgin material and the problem of waste disposal. However, there is a lack of information about the behavior of recycled corrugated boards when subject to long-term stacking in a cyclic relative humidity conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the corrugated board performance at cyclic enviranment in order to obtain a relationship between relative humidity and the strenght loss of corrugated board materiaIs. The studied materiaIs were two types of linerboards and mediums (virgin and recycled) made into five combined boards. The paper and the combined board were subjected to bending and compression tests at standard relative humidity and high relative humidity conditions. Creep rate of boards was measured in a cyclic relative humidity as was top-to-bottom creep of tubes made fram the combined boards. Results of cyclic creep tests on combined board made with recycled components exhibited higher higroexpansive strain, higher creep rates and more creep failure. Material hygroexpansivity was directly related with material creep rate. Combined board made from alI recycled components (RRR) had the highest minimum creep rates along with the largest hygroexpansive amplitudes. Conversely, combined board made fram alI virgin components (VVV) had the lowest minimum creep rates and the smalIest hygroexpansive amplitudes. The static compression strength tests detected no statistical difference (p >0,05) in performance of two vastly different combined board (VVV) and (RRR). One test that did show a distinction between the two extreme materiaIs was the bending test most likely due to the difference in combined board component stiffness. A strongest relationship was obtained between creep rate and a stiffness property characterized by the universal slenderness of the panels of the corrugated tubes. The results showed that combined board tubes made from all recycled components (RRR) had the lowest performance and the tubes made from all virgin components (VVV) had the highest. Corrugated fiberboard tubes made from virgin medium (VVR) performed poorly when subjected to cyc1ic relative humidity as compared to corrugated fiberboard tubes made from the same linerboards but with recycled medium (VRR). At the cyclic humidity condition there was no statistical difference (p >0,05)) between corrugated fiberboards tubes made from recycled double back linerboard (RVV) and corrugated fiberboard tubes made from all virgin components (VVV). Standard strength tests did not correlate well with the results of cyclic creep tests
