RESUMO

This dissertation presents some aspects of the spelling in the famous Carta, written by Pero Vaz de Caminha, reporting the discovery of Brazil to the king of Portugal in 1500 BC. This work represents a contribution to the study of Portuguese orthography. It also contributes to the study of spelling, in general. Caminha s spelling is typical of the XV century orthography in Portugal. It follows the court tendency in writing, since the Carta s author was an official secretary at the Govemment Chancellery. Compared to actual Portuguese orthography, Caminha s spelling is not so much different. The major differences are found in the common use of abbreviated forms, in the writing material display on paper and in capital letters and punctuation marks. Some occurrences of word spelling variations within the document are also noticeable
