RESUMO

In this work we propose to study the electronic structure of Ni1-xC ux alloys with various concentration (0 £ x £ 1) using photoemission (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES).The main objective is to verify the charge transfer between the Cu and Ni atoms, when these elements form alloys. We measured and compared core level energies (2p3/2) of Cu and Ni, in the pure metals and the alloys, and also energies of the Auger electrons L3M45M45 of Cu. The theoretical model used, correlated the energy shifts of core peaks and Augers peaks to Fermi energy and changes in the ocuppation of valence states. "Auxiliary" alloys contaning low concentrations of Au with Ni and Cu were also used in our tests for charge transfer. The results for Cu showed almost no change in its electronic structure, also we observed that within our experimental error the Fermi level was the same for the alloys as for pure Cu up to 35% of Cu in alloys. For smaller concentration, the results show that Fermi level decrease in alloy in relation to pure Cu in order 0.3 eV. For Ni, our results showed that an internal redistribution of electrons in the valence band with transfer from sp states to d states, when we decrease Ni concentration. To quantify this redistribution we used atomic calculations, which indicate that the redistribution was of the order of tenths of an electron
