RESUMO

For a given solidification structure it is important to be able to predict the effect of any heat treatment on that structure. This is of particular importance in terms of changes in solute distribution and dissolution of non-equilibrium second phase, which have a major influence on the mechanical properties. In this study, a mathematical model is outlined, describing diffusional processes during homogenization in a volume element, and çomparison made. between theory and experiment for different treatment times and temperatures. These comparisons were made for both single and multiplephase alloys. For the single phase case (Cu-Ni), the changes in interdendritic solute profile with treatment broadly followed the predicted behaviour, although quantitative comparison was somewhat impeded by resolution problems, principally causedby the very fine dendrite arm spacing of the material used. The multi-phase system studied was AI-Cu, the solute profiles of copper and incidence of the 0phase (A12Cu) being examined. In this case quantitative comparisons éonfirmed the validity of themodel, including the incorporated assumption that the dissolution of the 0 phase is controlled by diffusion in the matrix. In this alloy, another phase was observed at a relatively hign incidence leveI, which was tentatively identified as CU2FeA17. The dissolution of this phase was very slow, suggesting the presence of an interfacial barrier to dissolution. The implications of these observations were considered in practical terms
