RESUMO

The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency of the cephalometric radiographic analysis with the polysomnographic analysis for the diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) in 60 patients who were suspected to suffer from this condition. Data obtained with cephalometry were found trustworthy, as this method is largely applied to diagnose patients with apnea, principally to determine the obstructed sites, thus serving as a guide for further therapy. The results show no statistically significant difference between the diagnostic capacity of the radiographic cephalometry versus the polysomnographic analysis. The radiographic cephalometry proved capable to perform a satisfactory diagnosis of patients with OSAS (sensibility ? 91.5%). On the other hand, radiographic cephalometry was not capable to identify, in a satisfactory way, people who did not suffer from OSAS (specificity ? 38.5%). Finally, as the radiographic cephalometry demonstrated high sensibility in determining the obstructed sites, we concluded that this analysis should be part of the diagnostic procedures, together with the polysomnographic analysis, for patients suspected to suffer from OSAS.
