RESUMO

The current knowledge on the behavior of Brazilian stream fishes is restricted to few studies. These works show that streams are well suited for behavioral studies em]!)hasizing fish natural history. In this chapter, the main sampling techniques and recording methods used in behavioral studies are presented. These methods combined with diving techniques are effective too1s for studies of the stream ichthyofauna. Naturalistic studies allow direct observations of behavior and may bring an accurate knowJedge Bf fish biology. It is desirable to have more studies on the behavior of stream fishes focusipg on aspects such as feeding tactics, reproductive strategies, and defensive mechanisms. Besides their scientific and teaching value, naturalistic studies cause little impact on the environrnent and may serve as a basis for other lines of research, such as ecology of communities, ecomorphology, ecophysiology, and conservation
