RESUMO

This research aimed to do a histological and histometrical comparison of two types of implant surfaces in areas submitted to alveolar osteogenic distraction. To do this, 48 smooth and rough surface implants were inserted in the jaws of 8 dogs, 24 on the side where bone was Iengthened 5 mm vertically and 24 on the opposite side, which served as control group. The animals were sacrificed and analyzed at the periods of 40 and 80 days after the implants were put into place. The result showed that the proposed method was efficient for enabling bone regeneration in the implants inserted in the distracted areas, irrespectively of the type of surface used and that the group sacrificed at 80 days obtained higher statistically significant results in relation to bone contact and the area relative to neo-formed bone, when compared to the group sacrificed at 40 days. With regard to the type of surface, the rough one was statistically significant better, shown to be superior to the smooth one in the second sacrifice period in areas submitted to alveolar distraction. It was also concluded that the regenerative behavior of implants in the control group was similar to that of the area that was submitted to alveolar bone distraction
