RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the neurological changes found in two institutions from 12/01/1998 to 11/30/1999. For this purpose, 292 newborns were selected from the Campinas Maternity Hospital and 206 ones were selected from the Center for Integral Assistance to Women?s Health of the State University of Campinas. All of them were submitted to a transfontanel ultrasonography, according to their protocols, and the determination and comparison of the general prevalence and the pathology groups in each institution. Then, the results were analyzed according to gestational age, weight, adequacy of weight to the gestational age, and sex. Finally, the newborns weighing less than 1,500 grams were evaluated regarding peri-intraventricular hemorrhage. The studied groups differ as to gestational age, adequacy to the birth weight, the frequency of preterm newborns, low and very low birthweight, and frequency of neurological changes found: intracranial hemorrhage and choroid plexus cyst. As to the peri-intraventricular hemorrhage prevalence and its extension, no significant difference was found between both units. Yet, a significant difference was found regarding the adequacy of weight to the gestational age. In this group, the variable gestational age fewer than 30 weeks was kept statistically significant. We concluded that differences were found in the ultrasound findings of both institutions. The high prevalence of neurological lesions found in both groups of this study proves the importance of the ultrasonographic diagnosis
