RESUMO

Invasive breast carcinoma of 501 patients were studied for the presence and quantity of estrogen receptors, through the biochemical method of dextran charcol coated (DCC). Patients were analysed clinically regarding staging, adjuvant treatment, relapse, response of recurrence to treatment, treatment of advanced cases and inflammatory carcinoma. There was a greater rate of recurrence in patients with tumors without receptors (28% vs 22%), a better response to treatment in recurrent positive receptor cases (75% vs 59%) and advanced cases (87% vs 53%) and a longer disease free and total survival rate for positive receptor tumors. Receptors are a significant measurement for prognosis when associated with the axillary lymphonodal status. Patients with axillary involvement and no receptor have a greater risk of relapse. The response to treatment is directly proportional to the receptor concentration. A sub-grouping of inflammatory carcinoma with a good prognosis was defined, consisting of subclinical inflammatory cancers with positive receptors and those with local disease and positíve receptor.
