RESUMO

A comparative analysis of vegetative anatomical characters was carries out in Gossypium hirsutum L. var. maria galante (Watt) Hutch. Cv. Moço and var latifolium Hutch. Cv. I.A.C - 17. Observations of the stem/root transition region were made on seedlings. In the leaf, stem and root, both young and mature stages were studied. The principal anatomical differences between the two varieties were found in the leaf structure. The cells of the adaxial epidermis in var. maria-galante normalyy have straight walls when sees in front view while those of var. latifolium have more undulate walls. The mean number of stomata/ mm POT. 2 is greater in the abaxial epidermis of var. maria-galante. This variety usually has its stomata raised slightly above the level of the abaxial epidermis while in var. latifolium, the stomata are slightly sunken or at the same level or rarely raised and the occurrence of atypical stomata was also noted. The palisade of var. maria-galante consists, in places, of two layers of cells although the total height of the palisade layer is greater in var. latifolium. The spongy mesophyll of the latter variety has large air spaces, but the lysigenous glands of var. maria-galante have a greater diameter...
