RESUMO

Population dynamics and structure of three tree species previously assigned to different ecological groups were described and compared. The species were Acacia po/yphy/la (pioneer), Piptadenia gonoacantha (early secondary) and Aspidosperma po/yneuron (Iate secondary). The study was carried out at Santa Genebra Reserve, a semideciduous forest fragment in SE, Brazil. The analysis of the mortality, recruitment and growth rates of the individuais ~ 15 cm gbh for 11 years revealed striking differences between these species. Acacia showed a stable population, but was a very dynamic species with very high mortality and recruitment rates, and a rapid diameter increment. Piptadenia maintained a stable population too, but showing lower mortality and recruitment rates. The growth rates in this species were exceptionally high. Aspidosperma showed very slow growth rates and was the only species to have a population decline. This decline was essentially related to the recruitment shortage in the classes above 15 cm gbh in this period. In the structure ana/ysis inc/uding juveniles (individuais smaller than 15 cm gbh), the size structure and spatial pattern of juveniles were very similar for the three species. Furthermore the proportion between juveniles and adults was approximately the same for these species suggesting that the differences observed in the recruitment at the larger size classes was related to the dynamic processes of the juveniles or to population cycles of these species. The differences observed among these species in some characteristics of population dynamics was in accordance with the previous classification in ecologica/ groups. However, when the popu/ation dynamics and structure were analyzed as a function of environmental disturbance levei, they did not agree with the behaviour expected for these groups
