RESUMO

The phytosociological structure of the herbaceous layer was studied in a seasonal semideciduous tropical forest at Mata do Jambreiro Biological Reserve (19°58 S and 43°55 W), Nova Lima county, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brasil. Floristic composition, growth forms, diversity, and abundance were considered as well as their variation between the dry and the rainy seasons. One hundred 1 x 1m plots were laid at regular intervals along two transect lines near a stream, including alI plant between 0,05 e 1,20m high. The phytoaociological aurveya were made during the dry season of 1990 and the rainy season of 1991. Although seasonal variation was found it was too small and not significant, suggesting that the enviromental conditions at the herbaceous layer could be considered fairly stable during the year. The growth form were grouped as: 1) herbs and subshrubs, 2) shrubs 3) lianas, 4) young trees, 5) bamboos, 6) unknowns. One hundred and sixty two speciea and 25 morphospecies were surveyed. Poaceae showed the highest abundance due to prevalence of Litbacbne borizontalis Chase, an endemic species. Rubiaceae showed the highest richness, with 24 species. A low total cover value (16,4%) was found, half of it being due to the growth form of herbs and subshrubs. The highest figure for absolute density (6,12 individual/m2) was presented by the growth form of young trees, which also showed the highest figure for Shannon s diversity (3,54 nats/individual).The whole sample gave a Shannon s diversity of 3,87 nats/individual with few species being abundant and most rare. The floristic composition of the herbaceous layer was discussed and compared with that of other regions in Brasil. The proportion of each growth form was similar to the expected for tropical forests. The occurrence of complex gradients, mainly of species density and individual density, is suggested as a model for the vertical structure of Brazilian forests.
