RESUMO

In the last few years commercial shrimp industry has been dealing with serious economical problems brought by inadequate management practices and the spread of viral diseases. These problems had great impact on the productivity of Brazilian shrimp farms. Albeit, some farmers still found shrimp culture as a profitable activity and have contacted researchers from Fundação Universidade Federal do Rio Grande FURG in order to search for solutions to improve the technical and economical viability for shrimp culture in Southern Brazil. At Rio Grande do Sul, considerable low temperatures during winter and autumn restrict shrimp culture to the warmer months of the year. In order to increase profitability, shrimp farmers must determine the best strategy to utilize the warmer season. This must consider shrimp market price fluctuations throughout the year, which are close related with shrimp landings from artisanal fisheries in Patos Lagoon. Another important aspect for the development of shrimp culture in our region is the appliance of environmental sound aquaculture practices. Therefore, this study aimed to produce basic information to develop shrimp culture industry in Southern Brazil considering the modern concepts of environmental friendly aquaculture.
