RESUMO

Based on references of Semiotic Representations Registers Theory by Raymond Duval (1993), this research intends to analise the usage that high school students do use Semiotic Representation registers in order to solve math problems. According to the Author, the access to math objects is made through these representation registers, because such objects aren t physically noticeable and this very access determines what is specific about a knowledge activity. The analysis of the results of 58 answers of the students on third degree on High School to four math problems, allowed us to realize that the students aren t acquainted to use several different semiotic representation registers to solve a question. The usage of natural language registers was used in the beginning or ending the resolution, in order to attempt to explain it or justifies it, becoming an conversion. There are students that used as less as possible a number of different registers in a question, doing a few conversions and achieved a good performance. Students who used several representation registers and did many conversions had in majority, good performance in the question. On the other hand, students that didn t represent properly the objects involved in the question weren t successful. Problems that required the usage of any specific language diminished the possibilities of choosing the registers, and that influenced the performance of some students who didn t use properly the required language. In generally, the most used languages were the arithmetic language and the natural language. Research points to the importance, while teaching, of exploring the math objects by different representation registers as well as doing different conversions to the same object.
