RESUMO

The following research studied the strategies utilized in the process of coping and the perception of quality of life. The research was conducted in a group of patients whose lives were affected by a stroke and are currently in rehabilitation process. A relationship was made based on their daily activities, time of stroke, and time of rehabilitation, sex and age. The survey was made from march to October 2006 and conducted on 17 patients, 12 men and 05 women, with age varying between 34 and 82 years. The average age was 58,8 years and the standard deviation, 11,02. All stroke patients were committed to the Clinic of Physiotherapy of Unigran - Dourados, MS, Brazil. The cognitive tests were MiniMental State Examination (Bertolucci, 1994) the Inventory of coping (Folkman and Lazarus, 1985), translated version (Savoia, 1996), the Index of Katz (Gallo et al.,1995) e The Wisconsin of Quality of Life of Customers of Services of Mental health (W-QLI) (Becker, 1993) . They were conducted in consecutive sessions before or after the rehabilitation physiotherapy. Information about the sudden of attacked time of the stroke, time of rehabilitation and sort of sequels had been gotten by means of interview half-structuralized took effect with each patient. In relation to strategies of coping in stroke relation, the results denoted that men had used more the self-control strategy, while women had used in bigger ratio, the problem solving. The indexes of Alfha of Cronbach had not reached the expected standard except for the strategies of confrontive, social support and escape-avaidance. The majority of the patients used the problem solving strategies (81%) and positive reappraisal (59%). The perception of the quality of life was correlated positively with the strategy of coping of escape-avaidance (r = 0,529). The instrumentals activities were correlated negative with the strategy of positive reappraisal (r = 0,025) and the variable: finances was positively correlated with the confrontive strategy (r = 0,559).The results suggest that these patients may have a positive evaluation in relation to their satisfaction in terms of quality of life, physical health, social support, this has a positive contribution in their perception and coping with the stroke.
