RESUMO

This work aimed at identify management aspects on decision making of farmers in North Region of Espirito Santo, Brazil, in 2006. Using a psychological approach, this study showed its importance on farm management processes involved understanding. For this, objectives, management styles and personal characteristics of farmers and their farms were identified. Also, were definite main areas of interest on management capacity improvement. This research found that family welfare is the main objective of decision makers on business agriculture in North of Espirito Santo. Level of education was the variable that influenced most of issues related to objectives, confirming its importance to agricultural policies. About management styles, were identified four, style 1 referred to less anxious farmers, rarely being in a bad mood and valuing retire so much. Style 2 include more anxious farmers, who like to share with other people what happen on the farm and dislike keep records, including costs and incomes. On style 3 they were more controller and demanding farmers, besides, they dont use to ring up strangers to find out information, sticking at own principles to make decisions. Style 4 characterized anxious farmers, most of them residents on farm. About management capacity, most of farmers were interested in improving by managerial training, the younger ones with more interest. Most preferred courses given by specialists, including technical issues, as well as managerial aspects, like planning. This study did its utmost at identify objectives and management styles, as well as relationship with personal variables on farmers and his farms. It was possible to verify that management capacity components may give important picture to investigate issues related to decision making.
