RESUMO

The Chinese Traditional Medicine (MTC) is composed by a theoretical-empirical knowledge and acupuncture is one of its main techniques. The use of acupuncture on the west rose to the point of being the most practiced method among the complementary therapies. Along with this westernization, a new language appeared, besides the traditional, which came from China. This new way of looking at it, occidental and scientific, changed the way the technique is thought through and also changed the patient approach, leading to two Thought Styles: Traditional and Scientific. This study has as its purpose to identify the characteristic elements of each Thought Style on the health area graduated professionals specialized in acupuncture, identify the TS present on the acupuncture literature and characterize the professionals. The research methodology consisted in a qualitative approach, through Flecks (1986) categories applied in a documental analysis of two acupuncture books (Traditional and Scientific) and interviews with specialists on the techniques. The Flecks constructivist epistemology used in this dissertation showed the importance of the historical context when it comes to a better understanding of both acupuncture Thought Styles. The date analysis showed that even on the West some professional adopt a Traditional Thought Style, acting according to the classic MTC. There are also professionals who deny the classic style and see a great potential on acupuncture as an extremely effective technique that can be used in the occidental sciences patterns. Nevertheless, the most important point of this dissertation lays on its perception that the majority of acupuncturists act without precise limits or fix models, they alter between both styles
