RESUMO

This work is aimed at the investigation of the use of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) for identification of falsified drugs. The work is based on the comparison of the NIR spectra of a sample with a typical spectra of an authentic drug, allowing its classification as false or authentic. Since the NIR spectral region is difficult to be interpreted, it was necessary to employ multivariate chemometrics for data treatment. The proposed methodology was evaluated, using a spectra set of various drugs selected in order to include the diversity of physico-chemical characteristics found among commercial products. Initially, the investigation of the NIR spectroscopic technique for identification of adultered or false drugs was carried out. The performance of the technique was evaluated by using real samples of falsified drugs. All false products were positively identified. The investigation was extended to the identification of drugs containing the same active principle but made by different manufacturers, drugs inside their packages, with expired validity, with different concentrations of the active principle and under distinct forms of trade. The results show unequivocally the potential of the NIR spectroscopy as a tool for determination of drug quality and identification of falsified products.
