RESUMO

It was investigated by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (EPR) at X band (~9GHz), the chemical nature and the interaction of free radicals in Arab, Colombian and Brazilian petroleum asphaltenes, under natural photodegradation conditions. The EPR spectra showed a single signal for organic free radicals. From this line were determined spectroscopic factor that characterizes the chemical species and the relaxation time that indicates the interactions between the spins and its chemical neighbors. Irradiation in the sun generates free radicals similar to those existing in Colombian oil, and different species in Arab oil; it promotes the destruction of the aromatic fraction and reduces the asphaltene fraction in the oils studied.
