RESUMO

Professional Training in Workers Health, the subject of this study, is a significant contemporary research theme and one of the major consolidation strategies for the National Network for Workers Integral Health Care (RENAST) in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). Despite being recently implemented and in spite of the health crises, such a network needs professionals trained to view both the relationship between health and work and the health-disease process in a critical way so that they may contribute with groundbreaking practices towards a new perspective of integrality, surveillance and humanization in health care at the SUS. This study is aimed at analyzing Workers Health Specialization Courses in Brazil from 1986 to 2006 by focusing both on the prevailing explanatory framework to account for the relationship between health and work and the implicit goal of their professional training. Since, to the best of our knowledge, no scientific literature was found regarding the professional training in Workers Health, this novel, innovative exploratory qualitative study seems fully justified. Notwithstanding the conceptual weaknesses found in some courses, most of them were shown to be training within the framework of Workers Health aiming at both the workers needs and the implementation of RENAST at the SUS.
