RESUMO

Introduction: the family health strategy has been consolidated as a way of action of the primary attention in Brazil. The introduction of mouth health actions have been motivated since 2001. Objective: Identify the socio-demographic and occupational profile of the dentist- surgeons (DSs) in the Mouth Health Groups (MHG) of the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in Salvador city in 2008. Methodology: A transversal cross-sectional descriptive study. Eighty-eight professionals formed the content of the research: Seventy-six of them agreed to participate of it, corresponding to a loss of 13, 6%. The data collect was made through a structured self-applied questionnaire with the aim to collect information about socio-economical and occupational conditions of the DSs, as a kind of formation in the post-graduation, insertion in the private department, work time, selection formation and work contract in the MHG. Results: Most of the dentist-surgeons were female (75,0%), at the average ages of 35 to 46 years old (36,8%), having more the eleven years of graduation (60,6%). Related to school education, they studied at: high school (75,0%) and elementary school (75,0%) in private schools. Related to superior degree, (80,3%) studied at state universities, having UFBA (Federal University of Bahia) as the one which graduated the most of them, the one which contributed to the formation of (67,1%) of the DSs. The entrance to the FHS was through a public selection (88,2%). It is important to be known that most of them do not work at private department (73,7%), having the public service the main and the only one which is the employer. Conclusion: The professional profile of this group can be considered positive once the insertion in the private department could damage the practicing of them in the public department. However, the specific graduation in the field can be an aspect to improve local managers.
