RESUMO

The cirolanids are isopods of the suborder Flabellifera that are found widely distributed in tropical regions of the world. The familyâs study is in embrionary stage, owning lacunae in groupâs taxonomy, ecology and biogeography. With good resource of familyâs exemplars collected recently in REVIZEE project, N-NE commissions, and material of oceanographical expeditions realized in 60-70 years, a study was make of the cirolanids species distributed in the continental shelf and seamounts of Brazilian North and Northeast regions. Besides taxonomy, the ecology and geographic distribution of the species were studied. Eleven cirolanid species were reported in the study area. Cirolana parva and Natatolana gracilis are the best distributed species, the first is found in sand and algae bottoms until 88 m depth, and the second one, specially in transition algae organogenic bottoms, near the continental slope (until 98 m depth). The Bathynomus species (B. giganteus and B. miyarei) are found usually in the continental slope, but they are already collected in the continental shelf (in lobster traps). Metacirolana agaricicola has it geographic distribution restricts to Caribbean Sea and Norte seamountâs chain, as well Eurydice convexa that was registered also in Pernambuco. Metacirolana riobaldoi was found in continental shelf between Espirito Santo and Sergipe (88 m depth). Metacirolana sp. A has been found distributed in the continental shelf in coarse bottoms, between 39-64 m depth. The other species (Cirolana minuta, Cirolana palifrons and Natatolana sp. A) were registered once time in the study area. The most of the species was exclusive of occidental Atlantic, with B. giganteus and C. palifrons occurring also in Indic ocean. Natatolana sp. A, B. miyarei, M. riobaldoi and Metacirolana sp. A were, until the moment, endemic for Brasil. C. minuta e M. agaricicola were recorded first time in Brazilian littoral, as long as Natatolana sp. A and Metacirolana sp. A are new species for the science
