RESUMO

The flow of now-newtonian fluids in pipes shows many challenges to the theorethical and experimental research and the flow of polimeric solutions in as important part of this subject. In the present work aquous solutions of hydroxyethyl cellulose were used in concentrations between 1000 and 2500 ppm by weight, and the flow in the laminar and in the turbulent regions was analyzed. The rheological study of the fluids was mede and it was concluded that the pseudoplastic model represents the rheological behavior of these fluids, under the considered conditions. The peformance os the Dodge and Metzner?s and the Shaver and Merrill?s correlations was compared with the experimental results of the fluid flow in pipes. These experimental results were utilized to obtain two empirical correlations using the apparent Reynolds number, being one of them in the Blasius? form and the another one in the Prandtl?s form. It was observed that the drag reductions phenomenon occurs at high flow rates in the fluid flow in pipes. The experimental results of this region were used to get an empirical correlation to predict the drag reduction porcentage using the solvent Reynolds number
