RESUMO

The aims of this cross-sectional study were to know the epidemiological profile of pregnant women with reactive VDRL test, in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, in 2008, and analyze sociodemographic and some behavioral data from their partners. During the six month period of study, 58 women were consecutively interviewed following delivery, occurred in one of the five public maternities from the municipality. Data were also recovered from medical files and pregnancy cards. Sociodemographic and obstetric data, and information related to the diagnosis and treatment of syphilis from both pregnant woman and partner were analyzed. It was possible to verify the fraction of pregnant women with syphilis and of their partners, considered not correctly treated according Brazilian Health Authority s recommendations, and to assess the reasons for treatment inadequacy. Only three (5.2%) pregnant women have received adequate treatment. The main reason for inadequacy was lack of partner treatment (89.6% of cases). Between the 36 pregnant women who had known the diagnosis of syphilis during antenatal care or before the pregnancy, diagnosis had been communicated to the partner in 32 (88.9%) cases. A second VDRL test, to be done at the beginning of the third trimester of pregnancy, is strongly recommended. It was possible to assert the need for a better involvement of health system in drawing partners to be treated. Medical care currently provided did not warrant syphilis control in pregnant women. In order to achieve a better control of syphilis during pregnancy, it is necessary a deeper commitment from health care workers.
