Within the period of 2002 to 2006, the total of 568 cases and 43 deaths were notified (7.6% of lethality). The yearly distribution of the cases were: 22 cases in 2002, 97 in 2003, 131 in 2004, 158 in 2005 and 160 cases in 2006, corresponding to the incidence coefficients of 31.1; 13,6; 18.2; 21.0 and 21.3 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. Most of cases occurred in children under 5 years old and also reached other ages. Male sex was predominant, with 64% of cases. The highest lethality occurred in adults with the age of 60 and moreover, most of them associated with coinfection with other diseases. Thre of the seven regions concentrated 70% of cases.
