RESUMO

The difficulties found in the constitutions of the agrarian reform settlements in Brazil are large. Since the occupation of these areas, passing through the resistance of the families to the numerous forms of repression, arriving finally to the acquisition of land, where the challenges are in the ambit of production, searching for sovereignty and feed security for the families. To overcome the challenges imposed for production inside the peasant reality, it is necessary a deepening recognition of the area, as many settlements are created in regions environmentally distinctive of the settled families original regions. In this sense, this study was realized in the settlement Olga Benario, municipality of Visconde do Rio Branco, MG, aiming to develop and test a methodology, capable of uniting the popular and scientific knowledges, which can contribute for the construction and knowledge on local environment, with a better interpretation. Our goal was to decrease the adaptation period to the new local environment, by the settlers. For the development of this work, it was used the scientific principles of research-action. The methodology consisted of visits, walks, pedagogic workshops, exchanges and practical interventions, beyond laboratorial analysis, systematizing and devolution of results. Starting from concrete problems and demands, it was possible to stratify the settlement environments rescuing and building knowledge which will be useful for families planning production. It was deepened in specific themes demanded by the group for a better understanding of the environmental area reality. In this sense, the conceptual maps showed up as an important tool for treating and organizing the themes related with environmental education. These research-action generated advances on the awareness of the local agroecossystems conservationist management based on the limitations and potentialities of each environment of the landscape, helping to deal with the limited characteristics, like the natural fertility and erosion susceptibility. Soil was, therefore, a fundamental element for environmental interpretation of the area and understanding of the processes related to the use and management of the agroecossystems, keeping the environments sustainability. The previous knowledge of the settlements traditionally constructed, independently of origin, was the base for the remeaning and construction of new knowledges. This process happened in various moments during the research, lifting new demands for intervention works on the field.
