RESUMO
The purpose of the present thesis is to reread and interpret the work and experíences of literate men from Rio Grande do Sul which intended to join together ways to represent a peculiar identity to their southem province/State and models of history and national literature in XIXth century Brazil. Another objective of this study is to demonstrate how these identitary ideas have been spread thanks to a intense political and pedagogic activism in order to build the "conciousness of nationality" among Rio Grande s political elite, with particular emphasis to the teacher Apollinario Porto Alegre s work. The thesis also discusses the use of narratives and identitary symbols within the conflicts that took part at the beginning of the republican períod, as well as the ambiguities that contríbuted to the consolidation of the notion of the "gaúcho" identity as a tradition and to the notion of "regional" identityas a way of belonging to the Brazilian "nation"
