RESUMO

Phylogenetic Systematics concerns about describing the biodiversity, finding the order within it, and understanding the processes that are responsible for the generation of life forms, in a general system of reference. However, this area needs to be fully understood before being taught. The general objective of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the insertion of the subject in both basic and university education. Its starting point is a diagnosis of how the topic is perceived by students and teachers, how it is covered in didactical Biology textbooks and how it can be developed in pedagogical situations. In this dissertation we investigate conceptual frameworks of students and teachers regarding Phylogenetics and analyzed didactical material and procedures. We observed limited and conceptually flawed topics on Phylogeny on Biology books, and that most students in the basic cycle had never experienced classes on the topic. In the university, the topic is vastly neglected, and both teachers and students have conceptual and methodological difficulties in handling it
