RESUMO
This paper consists on a research with parents and students from the high school three first grades from a private institution in the south of the state of Minas Gerais. The aim was to investigate which are the parents and the students expectations concerning the teaching of the Portuguese Language. The factors that motivated the research were the continuous parents and students complaining and questioning when it came to the material that was being used in the classes, because it suppressed the theoretical grammar teaching and, consequently, it limited the classes to the teaching of reading and text production. A lot of parents complained that their sons were not learning Portuguese. This way, parents and students were asked to answer a set of straight questions related to the importance of the theoretical grammar during the Portuguese classes. We have noticed that the majority of the questioned people gives considerable importance to the teaching and mastering of the standard speech rules, and that, besides the reading and text production teaching, they expect that the grammar rules be taught as well. This dissertation has as main theoretical references Bechara (2003), Silva (2004), Silva,E. (2006), Leite (1999), Bagno (2005) and Colello (2007).
