RESUMO

The human care in nursing gets professional through times, its interpretation passed from art to science characteristic and, more recently, as an art-science intermixed with a strongly humanistic aspect, incorporating various dimensions and patterns of knowledge in situations of nursing care. When we unveil the know-how of care practices, we are contributing to bring light to the nursing history itself, while profession constructed on health services. The general purpose of this study was to historicize the nursing patterns of knowing of care developed by nursing staff while caring for patients attacked by tuberculosis at Nereu Ramos Hospital, from 1943 to 1960. The theoretic framework was based on the nursing patterns of knowing developed by Carper (1978), Munhall (1993), White (1995) and Maia (2007). The study methodology is qualitative under a socio-historical approach based on the New History; oral history was used as method date- source-technique. The oral sources of the study were twelve workers. The data collection used the semi-structured interview. The study followed the Resolution 196/96 CNS and was approved by CEP/UFSC 337/07 that disposes about ethical rules for research involving human beings. The data were analyzed through the thematic content analysis proposed by Minayo (2004). The ethical, esthetical and empirical patterns of Knowing were emphasized as predominating in the development of nursing care practice during historical period of this study. The ethical Knowing was founded on human values and Christian religiosity, duty, abnegation, obedience and moral of that time directed behavior and attitudes of those workers. The nursing care practice was guided by Christian/humanistic values based on ethical philosophy of responsibility and on feminine ethics of care in which dialog, encounter and solidarity permeated the care relationships. Esthetical pattern of knowing expressed sensitivity, beauty, senses and meaning that transformed care in a creative and participative experience. At the same time, the esthetical expression of care presented cultural, religious and social values while performing activities that intend to make patients# daily lives more dynamic. The empirical pattern of knowing resulted through a know-how acquired during the caring practice based on knowledge shared by Sisters of Divine Providence and workers more or less trained, being strongly influenced by and subordinated to the medicine pattern of knowing. The nursing care practice went along with the medicine patterns, with new technologies and with therapies used in the treatment of tuberculosis. The proposed thesis for this study was confirmed thus demonstrating that nursing care performed by the nursing staff to patients attacked by tuberculosis at Nereu Ramos Hospital in 40th and 60th decades contemplated nursing patterns of knowing which followed and was anchored the caring science paradigms of that time.
