RESUMO

This research is resulted of the master s degree dissertation in Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychosomatic and Hospital Psychology of PUC-SP, with theorical reference of the Social-historical Psychology. The research had as general objective to verify the illness perception and coping strategies, in women with endometriosis. This study was accomplished with 30 women diagnosed with endometriosis, in two institutions that render assistance; 16 women in treatment in a medical center of ABC from São Paulo area, and 14 women that are part of the Brazilian Association of Endometriosis, with age between 28 and 38 years. The instruments used in the collection of data were: Questionnaire interview (with characterization of the social-demographic data and illness data) and Coping Strategies Inventory, validated by Savóia (1996). The results demonstrated that 56,7% of the subject of the sample notice the illness as very serious, 40% as serious and 3,3% as little serious. As the coping strategies, it was possible to verify that 60% of these women use the coping strategies in a positive and appropriate way. The conclusion of the results demonstrates that, most of these women, despite living with all of the limitations caused by the illness process, they look for concrete solutions in the illness resolution, demonstrating engagement in the appropriation process and incorporation of meanings
