RESUMO

Several international conferences and symposia sponsored by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) set up the directions for Environmental Education programs, emphasizing their characteristics, objectives and conceptualization. They indicate the convenience of bibliographic research on environmental themes that can be done with different types of information sources. The comparative analysis of two sources - text books and scientific magazines - showed that the magazines have advantages which qualify them as the best didactic materials for reaching the objectives of Environmental Education. The scientific magazines are sources of information about present environmental questions; they cover desirable contents for a program of Environmental Education, they approach specific themes; they are widely distributed and allow the access by pupils from different regions of Brazil; and they reveal an interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of the contents. Those advantages cannot be applied to text books because text books are traditionally produced according to rigid disciplinarily. The construction of a data base in are a of Environmental Education, inserting indexed articles from seven magazines can be taken as a source for primary and secondary school teachers, especially those desire to facilitate reading to their pupils. Such a data base has also provided information which indicates the differences among the magazines according to four currents of environmental thinking which reveal the ideology and the conception of the Man-Nature relationship. The dissertation also deals with a few questions related to methodology, epistemology and ideology - areas that can be linked to bibliographic research of Environmental Education programs
