RESUMO

The use of biomass for power generation is currently a possibility to unify the paradigm of sustainable development as well as to bring new chances of social and economic development. In the scope of the sources of renewable energy included in the Program of Incentive for Alternative Sources of Electric Energy (PROINFA) and in the context of universalization of electricity services, biomass has relative importance in respect to its inherent advantages for energy exploitation. Having vital characteristics such the capability to take care of decentralization with local available resources; being a source capable of providing job and income in the field, diminishing social inclusion and reduction of poverty; being abundant, clean and technologically consistent makes biomass a great opportunity for development. In this context, the state of Bahia, with 9,000 MW of installed power capacity, still uses biomass in a very marginal way. Being itself an essentially agrarian State and therefore, capable of producing biomass that could be used to generate electric energy, it is then plausible to explain why its use of biomass energy is so small. With the objective of investigating the barriers and opportunities presented in the production of electric energy in the State of Bahia in regards to the available technologies, the useful types of biomass found in the region, the applicable legal e regulation framework to biomass, the government incentives , it was verified that the State of Bahia possess significativel potential for this type of exploitation. And thus, planning and integration actions can win the difficulties with more efficient technologies which can change the scenario in the long run.
