RESUMO

This article discusses the main guidelines and global trends for international accreditation as it views this process as an expression of globalization and internationalization of higher education. It focuses on the characteristics of these new processes of evaluation and accreditation in the region. As part of the growing complexity of higher education, it explores the reasons why accreditation was introduced in the region, and how the peculiarities of national systems and sub-regional evaluation and accreditation processes determine the differential in the international accreditation in the region. The article details the various axes on which accreditation is being built in the region. The article sees a trend towards international accreditation in Latin America based on a variety of market, academic and governmental forms, in the framework of a slow process of construction of international regulations in which higher education is inserted and from which derive various types of responses of openness, control and protection.
