RESUMO

It is studied the effect of the adoption of more productive technologies in a competitive market structure and when there is state-owned companies. The effect of productive increases over the economy when the market is competitive is studied by taking Parente and Prescott’s (2000) original model. Some empirical works on the evolution of Total Factor Productivity (TFP) in Brazil are mentioned. Attention is devoted to the role of privatizations and free trade on TFP in Brazil and in other countries. Later, Parente and Prescott’s (2000) model is modified by the introduction of state-owned firms, which are considered less productive. The results of the simulation are presented and some economic distortions are commented.
