RESUMO

The secondary bulb growth is the genetic-physiologic anomaly causing more damages in the culture of the garlic, affecting, mainly, the bulbs commercial production. The excess of water in the bulbification time, it has been pointed out the main factors that contribute to the occurrence of this abnormality. Irrigation suspension during the bulbification time, provoking water deficit, it has been used by the producers, aiming at to reduce the secondary bulb growth rate with good results. However, the supply of water for the culture is directly related to the productivity increase. The objective of this work was to verify the water deficit effect in different times and levels, in the incidence of the secondary bulb growth and in the noble garlic productivity submitted to the vernalization. The experiment was carried out in field conditions in the Horticulture Sector at Lavras Federal University, using the experimental design of randomized blocks, with three replications. The factorial scheme used was 4x4+1, being four times in that the irrigation was suspended (50, 55, 60 and 65 days after the planting), four periods of water deficit (8, 12, 16 and 20 days), and control treatment, not submitted to the water deficit. The cultivar used was âRoxo PÃrola de CaÃadorâ, being the bulbs-seed submitted to the vernalization of 50 days in cold chamber, to the average temperature of 4ÂC. It was verified that the increase in the period of water deficit, in all times appraised, reduced linearly the secondary bulb growth rates, with linear increment in the commercial bulbs production. Larger periods of water deficit affect the growth of garlic plants, however, accelerate the bulbfication, with commercial bulbs production with larger average mass.
