RESUMO

The research examines the effects of China s international trade expansion and diversification of its export and import portfolio on Brazilian foreign trade, both in terms of changes in the trade portfolio between the two countries and in terms of competition in other markets. The study will highlight the period between 1998 to 2008. This range includes different moments of Brazilian and world economy. The focus is on 1998, 2003, 2007 and 2008. The analysis is made by technological level intensity of the sectors. Throughout the ten years analyzed, China has maintained accelerated growth and Brazil faced the strong commercial expansion of the giant Asian. Brazilian exports to China consist in commodities such as soybeans, iron ore, steel, soy oil and wood. Brazils imports of China are increasingly complex products such as machinery, equipment and parts, nuclear reactors, electronic integrated circuits, liquid crystal items, among others. Moreover, China is gaining market share in products that Brazil exports to other countries. China imposes changes to Latin America and Brazil that turns necessary to rethink development theories
