RESUMO

Biological invasions by Hovenia dulcis Thunb., a tree from Asia, have been reported for Africa and South America. The present work aimed to evaluate the effects of the establishment of this exotic species on abundance, richness, species composition, growth, successional categories and beta diversity of natural regeneration in the Atlantic Rain Forest. Thus, the tree-shrub regenerating component (15 - 100 cm tall) was investigated in a southern Brazilian submontane (lowland) Atlantic Rain Forest area after the establishment of invasive tree H. dulcis. Data on abundance, diversity and height were collected in 60 circular sampling units of 2 m radius, divided between two treatments. Among the methods, we used univariate and multivariate tests to detect patterns and differences between treatments. Our results show that H. dulcis did not affect the quantitative aspects of the community, such as abundance and richness. Effects of H. dulcis were observed on the species composition, frequencies of successional categories and beta diversity. The invasion on the studied area was under control by biotic resistance. The differential effect of H. dulcis on regenerant component was confirmed by the results of the present study. The biotic resistance to invasion by H. dulcis at the regional level of the Atlantic Rain Forest was associated with the good conservation status of forest areas.
