RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to verify, using the confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), if the use of a photoactivated resin of low viscosity (Biscover®) and a ethyl-cyanoacrylate (Super Bonder®) could be efficient in the prevention or reduction of Candida albicans biofilms. Fifty six reline resin specimens (New Truliner) were fabricated and randomly divided into 7 groups: G1 (C)- Control; G2 (SBAE)- a Super Bonder® layer was applied on the surface before sterilization; G3 (SBDE)- the surface received a Super Bonder® layer after sterilization; G4 (SB3G)- 3 drops of Super Bonder® were incorporated in the structure of the resin; G5 (SB4G)- 4 drops of Super Bonder® were incorporated in the structure of the resin; G6 (BCDE)- a Biscover® layer was applied on the surface after sterilization; G7 (BCAE) the surface received a Biscover® layer before sterilization. All the specimens were inoculated with Candida albicans for biofilm dvelopment. The remaining biofilms on the specimens were stained with fluorochromes SYTO-9 and propidium iodide to be analyzed by CLSM. The data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn test, considering a significance level of 5%. The data obtained by CLSM revealed that of all specimens modified, those that received a Super Bonder® layer on their surface, G2(SBAE) e G3(SBDE), presented the better results, reducing Candida albicans biofilm formation. Analyzing the images produced by CLSM it was possible to see that groups G2(SBAE) e G3(SBDE) showed a reduced number of cells, and they were in a less phatogenetic form (Yeast), while the other groups showed a high number of cells in a more pathogenetic form (Hyphae). Considering the experimental conditions of this study we can conclude that the material modifications done with Super Bonder® on the surface could be an interesting way to prevent or control biofilm formation on acrylic resin.
