RESUMO

Oil and gas drilling activities usually involve the use of fluids that contain several heavymetals, among those, barium and cadmium, which can affect the biota from the surrounding area. Nematodes are the most abundant metazoan, and play an important role on the food web and in the carbon flux. The aim of this work was to analyze the population development of: (i) Pellioditis marina under influence of barium and cadmium; (ii) Diplolaimelloides oschei under the influence of cadmium. The specimens were obtained from a monospecific, agnobiotic and in an exponential growth culture. The experiment was realized in Agar media, where the concentrations tested were: 0, 120, 400, 2 000, 3 600, 4 800 and 10 000 ppm (for barium) and 0, 0.3, 1.0, 5.0, 9.0 and 12.0 ppm (for cadmium). The juveniles of P. marina were not affected by any concentration of Cd, where as the abundance of adults decreased with the increase of the concentration. In the experiment with Ba, from 2 000 onwards the density of juveniles and adults started to decrease. In the highest treatment all the individuals had died within three days, therefore there was not maturation of adults. The abundance of all stages of D. oschei life cycle was affected by Cd on the concentrations of 5.0 ppm onwards. Also in these concentrations there was a reduction of the embryonic developmental time. No adults were formed in the treatments 9.0 and 12.0 ppm. It can be concluded that oil and gas drilling activities may have important effects on the marine nematodes due the toxicity of the metals, as barium and cadmium
