RESUMO

Purpose: To identify if there is any difference in C-reactive protein (CRP) levels according to the tumor location and to evaluate the effect of a 28 days supplementation with Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in inflammatory status of cancer patients. Patients and Methods: Clinical trial enrolling in gastrointestinal (GI) and lung cancer patients. The inflammatory status was estimated by CRP variation from initial and after intervention with 28 days supplement with EPA or a standard supplement. The analyses were performed with non-parametrical tests by Stata 9.2. Results: Sixty and nine patients were assessed, 59% males, aged 65.5 11.8 years old. Most of the patients (72.5%) had GI cancer. Initial CRP was significantly higher in lung cancer, followed by colon/rectum, stomach/esophagus and pancreas/gallbladder (p= 0.009). CRP variation was assessed in 57 patients, and no significant difference was found between groups analyzed by intention to treat or protocol (28 days intervention completed). Sixteen patients in the EPA group and 8 patients in standard group had an early interruption of the treatment, being gastrointestinal intolerance the major reason for this (62.5% in EPA group and 50% in control group, p= 0.6). Conclusions: Lung tumors showed to be more inflammatory than the gastrointestinal ones. There were no significant differences in CRP variation between the intervention and control groups in intention to treat or protocol analyzes
