RESUMO

Normal aging is associated with executive control deficits, displayed mainly in tasks that demand greater cognitive resources. In speech, these modifications can be observed through the increase in the number of produced errors and problems with self-monitoring. We examined speech monitoring abilities in healthy subjects ranging from 30 to 79 years, in order to analyze adult age differences in error detection and self-repair. Beyond correlating the accuracy of the monitor with executive functioning, we analyzed the participation of the three monitoring loops: conceptual loop, prearticulatory and postarticulatory loops. The monitoring abilities were evaluated through a non-usual and repetitive task: the description of visual networks. The generated data were correlated with verbal fluency performance. The results indicate that, although the elderly produced nearly three times more errors than young adults, they are not different from them in the monitoring mechanisms, because they detect and repair the same percentage of errors when compared with the young. Differences among the distinct age groups related to the use of the different monitoring loops have not been observed. The results indicate linguistic and cognitive factors contributing to efficient performance in normal aging. An increase of heterogeneity is however observed, mainly after 50 years old, with some older adults performing as well or better than young adults
