RESUMO

Background/Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the early and late effects of partial fundoplication (PFp), comparing with the total technique (TFp) on gastric emptying (GE) and on gastric volume (GV) and compliance (GC) in rats. Methods: One hundred and fifty-nine male Wistar rats underwent sham operation, PFp or TFp. They were randomly divided in early (E) and late (L) groups, evaluated in the 7th and 28th postoperative days, respectively. GE and GV/ GC studies applied in vivo methods. Evaluation of GE was performed with and without previous acute induction of GE delay, according to atropine administration or not. Results: GE studies: In the E group, in rats with GE delay, PFp and Tfp did not change significantly GE, when compared to sham operation. On the other hand, in rats without delay, PFp but not TFp accelerated significantly GE. In the L group, neither PFp nor TFp produced changes in GE. GV/GC studies: In group E, only TFp reduced significantly gastric volume (GV), but both PFp and TFp caused a significant decrease in GC. A trend towards normalization of GV and GC was perceived in group L. PFp did not change the IGP response either in the E or in the L group. However, TFp increased the IGP significantly in the E group, although this difference had disappeared on the 28th post-operative day. Conclusions: PFp induces less change in gastric motor physiology than TFp. These findings provide background to better understanding about some differences between the postoperative course of PFp and TFp
