RESUMO

The goal of this study is to investigate how ECE (Early Childhood Education) teachers assess the musical activities carried out with children in a private school in the Municipal district of Itajaí. It is therefore characterized as a study which takes a qualitative approach. The participants of the survey were four CE teachers of two kindergarden classes; Nursery I (3 years) and Nursery II (4 years) and one pre-school class (5 and 6 years). The pedagogical practice of the teachers was observed, in order to discover what musical experiences are offered to the children, and how these experiences are incorporated into the daily routine. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, to investigate the importance given by the teachers to the musical experiences offered to the children in CE, identifying their knowledge of music, as revealed when they talk about those experiences. It was verified that musical experiences are often restricted to singing activities, usually proposed by the teachers, and activities of exploring sounds, initiated by children but generally not improved by the teachers. The teachers recognize the importance of music for the childs development, and emphasize emotional and psychomotor aspects. However, they also recognize that the musical experience could be extended and enriched if they had more specific knowledge of music, and if musical instruments were available to the children
