RESUMO

Within the context of MST - Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais sem Terra (Landless Workers Movement), the struggle to gain land and other cultural values has involved the movement in many different manifestations of violence. In terms of Collective Health, violence has been presented as an object of study, inasmuch as it represents a threat to life and may result in death as a reality or possibility. In spite of those facts, the established approaches of Physical Education (PE) in regard to health have not usually included such matters as objects of study. Therefore, in order to better understand the MST phenomenon and create possibilities of bringing PE and Collective Health closer together so as to overcome this problem, participatory observation has been undertaken through involvement in the Special Training Period of Teaching Practice in PE and Education programs at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, where four circumstances (fields of research) were observed and various resources were utilized for generating data. Having expressed the key concept struggle as central in the relation between MST and violence, the results point to the following elements: i) there are different way of expressing the violence experienced by MST in their relations with society and in their internalcontradictions; ii) the Movement perceives and confronts these different forms of violence mainly through its political-educational project in the formation of militants; iii) the present prevailing theoretical-methodological bases of physical education in relation to health are inadequate for subsidizing critical approaches that make it possible to better understand and deal with this violence; iv) PE, in its critical branches, brings together theoretical support and practical experiences that are consolidated so as to deal with violence, and many of them are included in the proposal developed by the Special Training at UFSC, and v) there are areas of convergence that allow for a closer association between PE and Collective Health, so as to deal with the question of violence, including those in the MST social project carried out in Fraiburgo, SC. In regard to this last aspect, principies are presented, as conclusions, to orient the advances towards this drawing together of the two areas, which incorporate themes and approaches for PE, articulating the biological and social aspects; these principies go beyond the traditional concept that focuses on risk, through an understanding of the process and the dynamic aspect of reality, as well as clarify current reality in order to achieve autonomy, coupled with a clear vision of the society which they seek to build
