RESUMO

This thesis objective is to understand how women who are resident in the Salvador Metropolitan Region (SMR) responded to the phenomenal increase in precarization of the local labor market, which occurred between 1997 and 2003. The thesis defended here is that the changes, which took place in the Brazilian economy, particularly in Bahia, when passing from the 1990s to 2000s, not only impacted the way and characteristics for inserting men and women in the SMR labor market in an unequal way (this situation involved a reduction in previously existing structural asymmetries between genders) but also brought important differentiations for insertion among metropolitan women in this market. Additionally, the idea that, very probably, it was women in their capacity as daughters who most threw themselves into the metropolitan labor market frontiers is sustained, as it was exactly this group, which less pressured the labor market at the exact moment in which the mentioned precarization process stopped being considered serious and started to take on an absolutely alarming character. While underlining these points, it is appropriate to advise that the present study is marked out on information produced by Employment and Unemployment Research (EUR) for the years 1997 and 2003. This was only possible thanks to the fact that the volume of information raised at these two moments allowed for a broad range of investigations about various regional labor market aspects to be carried out, especially on their structural components. Considering this EUR database characteristic, the study seeks to put forward the answers metropolitan women were capable of offering from three different aspects. The first refers to their situation from the point of view of participation in the SMR labor market. Then it works with information related to participation and unemployment levels. The second is with regards to conditions and the type of work offered to women in such a market. At this point, the study turns to discussing questions referring to sectorial employment distribution, as well as allocation of occupation by status in that activity. The third and last aspect concerns women s problems related to income differentials.
