RESUMO

An anuran community was studied at the Serra do Japi, municipality of Jundiai (ca. 23Q13 S; 46°48 W, 870 m above sea leveI), São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. The following environments were studied: reservoir, rapid rivulets, temporary ponds, and the surrounding forest. The study was carried out between March 1988 and February 1989, and field data were obtained during short visits at regular intervals of one week. Additional field surveys were undertaken during the rainy season. Seventeen species of three anuran families were observed in reproductive activity: Bufonidae (2), Hylidae (11), and Leptodactylidae (4). The forested habitat favoured the greater number of Hylidae species because this group is adapted to a vertical occupation of the environment. I observed seasonality in the reproductive activity of the anuran community studied. During the rainy season there was a higher number of species in reproductive activity due to a greater availability of adequa te environments to this activity. The majority of the species in the community started to call near the sunset. Hylodes cf. ornatus was the only diurnal species and Bufo crucifer presented a bimodal activity pattern, calling during sunrise and sunset. The patterns of temporal and spatial distribution, and differences in the acoustical attributes of the calI among the majority of the species avoided overlapping in the resources utilized for reproduction. ...
